Using a Portfolio to Help Land the Job You Deserve

Why Do I Need a Portfolio?

  • A picture is worth a thousand words and a portfolio is your personal career picture book. Use it to let a prospective employer or client "see" what you've done.
  • In a tough job market, a portfolio is another way to set yourself apart and to demonstrate your professionalism.

  • A portfolio can help you focus the discussion in an interview on the accomplishments you wish to highlight.

Portfolio Do's:

Do: Include a variety of items showing relevant skills and products.

  • Copies of newsletters you wrote for or edited.

  • Press kits - mark which items you initiated, wrote or designed.

  • Published articles and  op-eds.

  • Brochures with your copy or design work.

  • Web pages featuring your work.

  • Reports you produced.

Portfolio Don'ts:

Don't: Show samples but not how they were used or their results.

  • If you include a press release or pitch letter, also include clips it generated or a report showing its use on radio stations, etc.

  • Lists and details outlining the organization of a special event should be accompanied by reports showing the results.
