Using a mix of communication skills and tools wisely marks a good public relations professional; using available resources wisely marks a good business person. These combined attributes distinguish KAL/PR, celebrating 10 years of providing clients with focused, affordable service. Karen Lubieniecki, president of KAL/PR, is an award-winning communications specialist. Prior to forming KAL/PR in 1987, she worked with several leading agencies. Today, she brings that experience to her own clients, specializing in health and science issues for non-profit and education-oriented clients. "I started the business because I like to be on the hands-on side of the business, at prices clients I want to work with can afford," explains Lubieniecki. She started by working from home for the first year, but for then moved to shared office space for the easy, instant access to services (such as a postage meter, conference space, and big collating copier) that would not be available otherwise. This judicious approach to selecting resources also led her to the services of PRofessional Solutions. One of the benefits of working with a firm like KAL/PR is that all of the client's work is handled by someone with real experience, while large agencies often must use junior people to keep costs manageable. It also means clients build a personal relationship with a professional with real interest and expertise in a the client's field. "There are two great thing about this type of public relations," says Lubieniecki. "One is that you meet a lot of interesting people and learn a bit about lots of different subjects. I have worked on everything from science museums to Shakespeare (the first Will Award) to truck safety to long term care, prescription medicines and kidney disease! The other great thing is that I know I am doing work that makes a positive contribution to people understanding issues that affect their daily lives." Of course, being a small firm has its challenges, particularly when things get busy. In those situations, Lubieniecki makes sure that work is still handled by experienced professionals by using PRofessional Solutions. "Recently, two clients had their out-of-town annual meetings scheduled back-to-back over a two week period, while another client had two major fund-raising events during the same period. Each was an important client, with whom I have a long-standing relationship, and each expected -- and deserved -- KAL/PR's best efforts," recalls says Lubieniecki. "PRofessional Solutions' associate was an invaluable help during this time. I literally couldn't have done it without her! Being able to tap into a professional service and bring on an experienced PR practitioner for several weeks, rather than having to hire someone part time, is really great," Lubieniecki reports. "And both annual meetings and the fund-raisers were great successes."
